"Lo, these are but the outskirts of his ways: And how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?" Job 26.14
Under estimating God seems to have always been a characteristic of human nature. Job looks at the magnificence of the physical universe with such thoughts as, "He stretcheth out the north over empty space, And hangeth the earth upon nothing." vs 7 Even though his understanding of the natural sciences was far less than what is known today, Job was aware that his understanding of God was woefully inadequate.
One would think that some understanding of the power and nature of God would have become common among mankind as our knowledge of science has increased. Indeed, the scripture says, "The heavens declare the glory of God." Ps 19.1
Unfortunately, God didn't think it necessary to put a brass plaque on each display of incredible creation stating, "made by God." God sent a message, a consistent message, compiled by men from various stations in life, over a period of about two thousand years. The message was simply: ya gotta have faith!
I've run into a few Christians over the years who are determined to put together "proofs" that God exists. They are uniformly committed to changing unchurched folks minds by the subtle power of argument. Their approach is akin to emotional blunt trauma force. Usually the argument is augmented by the power of old English and the use of volume. They appear to have, as my daughters might put it..."voice modulation control problems." I've noticed the same tactics used by some "evangelists" on television.
It seems that there is a conception that a dogmatic statement forcefully and angrily and loudly stated, is "anointed." These attempts at 'making disciples' is coercive and not in keeping with the principles of the kingdom. "That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the spirit is spirit." John 3.6
"How great is God?!"
Let's pursue the thought
that under estimating
God
The message of the power of God isn't realized in the phenomena of nanoscience nor the one hundred billion star systems in space. The adequate estimation of God is in the understanding that He loves us and sent us Jesus. Seems too simple? Is that inadequate in this age of space exploration and DNA manipulation?
That's faith. That's what love is all about. That's what God is all about. I don't make the rules, I just accept 'em. It's called "faith."
