'Nature declares the Glory of God'
Job 38.1-41 Oh the power and magnificence of the physical world! Where is God? Where isn't He?! From the massive storms on the sea, to the heartbeat of a hummingbird, God is there.
One of my favorite songs begins with the words, "Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made..." I stand out in the driveway in the late evening looking at the vast expanse of starry sky. As I view the visible universe, even limited as it is with the light pollution of the city, I do stand in awe of all the worlds unknown.
I am equally in awe of how marvelously the hummingbird is designed. How do Monarchs and hummingbirds migrate every year from the central regions of the United States to the southern regions of Mexico and Central America, and then make it back here the next year?
The Psalmist asked God, "Who is man that thou art mindful of him?" The old catechisms say that we were created "to worship Him and enjoy Him forever." Indeed, we have understood since childhood days in Sunday School that we were created for fellowship with God.
I'm afraid my perspective has been skewed by aculturization so that the norm of my daily activity centers upon me. My whole world is instantly and primarily perceived in how each event is going to effect me. I am at the center of my universe. It is all about me.
I have to have that little ritual each evening of experiencing the collapse of my large frame and personality into the insignificance of the darkness of my driveway as I look up through billions of miles and billions of star systems in dark space.
"Who am I that You are mindful of me? 'Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made. I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed...' "
Won't you join with me from your own driveway and experience the Glory of God? A feeling of insignificance from time to time does each of us a world of good.
