Holding on to your integrity!

There is a currently popular slogan which states, "Character Counts!" It is usually applied in some political context and generally as a weapon against someone's failures.

In this passage Job is commended and criticized for his integrity; commended by God and criticized by his wife.

I'm always curious as to what standards of personal integrity might be eventually evidenced by those who demand such of others.

God said of Job, "...he still maintains his integrity," while Job's wife was saying, "Are you still holding on to your integrity?"

Integrity! It is that character trait which states, "This is where I draw the line." Integrity is a strong and straight 'backbone' in the face of temptation or adversity. Integrity defines personally what is permissible and what is forbidden. Integrity isn't defining those boundaries for others. Integrity is always and only personal.

Job's integrity wasn't to be applied as his wife's conscience, nor was her conscience to be Job's sense of integrity. We, each, have integrity or we don't. Integrity is developed. It isn't a genetic trait nor is it defined by, or limited to, races or nationalities.

Character traits, such as integrity, ultimately announces to the world around us who we really are. The veneer of our facades eventually crack or crumble under pressures we don't anticipate. When that pressure happens our true character comes through. It has been said that, "the contents of a vessel are made obvious when the vessel is knocked down or tipped over."

Integrity is only a theory, and a hope, until tried by the fires of adversity. However, integrity isn't born in adversity. Integrity is a thoughtful persuasion which is decided upon before adversity ever hits. It is a decision as to values and priorities which is practiced in good times and continued even in the face of adversity.

What is the shape and substance of your integrity? Is it deep enough and strong enough and practiced enough to carry you through your next difficulty or major decision? Make up your mind today what your values are and how you wish to be known by all who watch you face your next temptation or adversity.
