"Mankind wandered- Enoch walked" Genesis 5
"...Enoch walked with God..." We usually concentrate on "...and he was not, for God took him." Walking with God, fellowship with God - that is the singular imperative in this narrative!
I've often used the old maxim, "The thing that makes men and rivers crooked is that they both follow the path of least resistance."
What is the link between the Old Testament 'greats' such as Enoch, Abraham, and David? Each of them "walked" with God, had "fellowship" with God, was a "friend" of God... and God used each of them greatly.
I've heard it preached that Enoch must have become to 'perfect' to remain on this earth so God took him. I hardly think that was the case with Elijah, yet God "took him," to use the phrasing from Enoch's case.
It certainly wasn't because of any innate goodness nor quest for perfection that God was in fellowship with, walked with, was a friend of - Abraham and David! I think it unlikely that Enoch was any more 'perfect' than was the very flawed Abraham and David. Yet, he walked with God!
In the daily 'walk' of mankind we wander. I could make it more case specific, less of a generalization, but you know your own life and I know mine...I even wander when driving down a relatively straight highway.
Our thoughts, our attention span, our sense of purpose, our intentions, our lives wander. Without constant attention we wander from our course. The difference between me and Enoch is that I don't apply diligence to my spirit 24/7. I don't even apply due diligence to my spirit sixty seconds of a minute.
But, when my "mind is stayed upon (Him)" I am straightened in my path and purpose. My life has meaning, I have peace. When I am attending to my spirit, when I am communing with God, I have the pleasure of 'walking with God.'
When I am 'walking with God' I can see things more clearly and have understanding how He always has and always will...and I can trust my way to Him!
