The Bible is about who we are – not who God is

II Timothy 3:14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The Apostle Paul wrote this specifically to a young fellow named Timothy. Timothy was greatly influenced by the teachings of his mother and grandmother. Paul knew this.

This letter that we consider scripture must be understood in that context. Paul wasn't saying to anyone who might read this in centuries to come that they should continue in what(ever they) had learned and become convinced of... This had specific application to the teachings of scripture that had come from a couple of women whom Paul had known personally.

Unfortunately, many doctrines have developed in Christianity because individuals have 'become convinced of' erroneous interpretations presented by folks who were sometimes psychologically unstable and frequently had anti-social tendencies.

Timothy's teachers were sound and stable -- emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually 'fit' ladies who "rightly divide(d) the word of truth."

Paul said to Timothy that this 'scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.'

This 'scripture' is Inspired to help us see who we really are, what our problems really stem from, what we need to do to change our self so that we are adequate for every good work that needs to be done.

There is really very little in Scripture that describes God. We get inferences of His Holiness and His Majesty and His Power from reading the scriptures, but we don't really come to know Him in His fullness, in His Power, Grace and Passion except by experiential relationship with Him -- and that is a 'spirit' thing.

Scripture is to reveal our true self to each of us. It is to reveal the truth and tragedy of humanity to humanity.

Scripture is to be each person's mirror so that each of us can see our self as we really are. Scripture is to inform, chasten, rebuke, correct and direct each of us so that we can be who we are supposed to be - as we are supposed to be.

Scripture is the greatest 'self-help' book ever written. It is to help us to 'sanctify' ourselves as it is written of the priests in the Old Testament who, in preparation for the dedication of Solomon's Temple, "sanctified themselves without regard to divisions."

Read the Book! Spend time allowing it to show you who you really are, so that you can be who you really want to be.
