Blessing and cursing

Luke 6:28  "bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." --New International Version

What does it mean to "bless" someone?

This is a higher order of behavioral performance. This is an intentional, deliberative, cognitive application of positive spiritual power toward people, places and situations.

Now that's a mouthful – but very important to understand! We have spiritual power that affects the world around us. We powerfully bless or curse daily, wherever we happen to be. We are rarely pH neutral in our situations…we tend to make them a little sweeter or a little sourer.

We bless or we curse, often without even saying anything.

What is this dynamic?

There is a basic assumption here:

that you believe the phrases learned from childhood catechisms -

The next assumption is that you consider yourself a follower of Jesus. Are you bringing blessings of peace to your situations?

There is no place for a Christian to be an agitator, irritator or trouble-maker. The only provocation we are to do is understood in Hebrews 10:24 "And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works..." -- King James

I really prefer the reading from the Living Bible: Hebrews 10:24 "In response to all he has done for us, let us outdo each other in being helpful and kind to each other and in doing good."

Now that, my friend, is blessing someone! You can fill in the blanks and understand that doing other than that would be cursing.

Bless! Be helpful, be kind, do good - everywhere, all the time, in any situation, to all people...be a person of blessing. When you are exasperated - pray for God's blessings on that situation or person.
