In search of the Ark of the Covenant
Great books and terrific action movies have generated interest in a subject previously of interest primarily to archeologists, Zionist Evangelicals, and Orthodox Jews.
Does the Ark still exist?
Is it still in Jerusalem somewhere or is it in Ethiopia?
Is it still the repository of God's Presence?
Will it kill anyone who touches it?
One of the historic difficulties for Christians, even during the very early years of the Early Church with debates between such illustrious personalities as Peter and Paul, was making the transition from being people of the Judaic scriptures into people of a 'new covenant.'
Not much seems to have changed in the past couple of thousand years. We still have loud voices from the sect of those who are Judaic sympathizers (the Zionist Evangelicals). They are keeping their feet firmly planted in the Old Testament and romanticizing the 're-establishment' of Israel and all that would entail in their interpretation of Old Testament prophecies.
Those from the mainstream of Christianity who are intrigued by speculation about the Ark are not so much fascinated by Zionism as they are by the historical aspects of archeological pursuits surrounding the 'lost ark.'
I'm in the latter category. Am I interested in what happened to the Ark of the Covenant? Yes, very much so! Am I intrigued by the possibility that its disappearance might have directly coincided with the disappearance of the old prophet, Jeremiah? Yes, absolutely!
Do I think it is important for Christianity and the cause of Christ for the Ark of the Covenant to be discovered?
No! Absolutely not!!
Briefly stated, the 'church' universal is our 'ark' of the New Covenant with God through Jesus, the Christ - the Son of the Living God. The presence of God is to be found beyond the veil which once separated the 'holy of holies' from the common people.
Perhaps it would do much of the Christian world good to reread the Book of Hebrews in the New Testament.
